Gardeners in Bromley › Guide
A simple calendar of what to do in your garden through the year.
Spring is when lawns wake up and weeds take hold. Give the lawn its first cut on a high setting once growth starts, edge the borders, and clear winter debris. It is also the time to plant out new borders and add mulch to hold in moisture. Check hedges for nesting birds before trimming.
Keep on top of mowing, watering new plantings and weeding. Hedges and shrubs that have finished flowering can be trimmed back. In dry spells water deeply and less often instead of little and often, and raise the mower height so the lawn does not scorch.
Autumn is the best time for lawn repair, scarifying, overseeding and planting trees, shrubs and bulbs while the soil is still warm. Clear fallen leaves from lawns so grass is not smothered, and cut back perennials once they die down.
Garden growth slows, so this is the time for structural jobs: pruning dormant trees and shrubs, repairing fences, and tidying sheds and beds. Avoid walking on frozen or waterlogged lawns.
